Fear of Fixing Your Finances
What are You Afraid of?
As we have started the New Year and have spent a great deal of time talking and counseling with families about their personal finances, I am amazed at the number of people who want to “put off” meeting about it.
“As soon as we get our Tax Refund back, we can set a time to meet. I just don’t have time right now.”
“Give me another month or two. I need to get all of my paperwork in order first.”
“Let me get my statements organized and then I will give you a call.”
I have come to the realization that most people are fearful of fixing their finances. People may not like their financial situation, but they are familiar with it and they are afraid to make substantial changes. Others may feel a sense of embarrassment about past financial mistakes and are worried that they are going to be judged for those mistakes.
Let me try to dispel some negatives about either of these “fears”.
First, if you are struggling financially and you know it, “a little more time” isn’t going to help. Time is only going to dig the hole a little deeper and it is going to take you longer to put a plan in place and get things fixed. Take a deep breath. Swallow your pride and make the call. It will only hurt for a little bit and then “things” will start to feel better. You will feel a sense of peace that will permeate your entire life. Simply putting a basic plan in place will help more than you realize!
Secondly, we are a 100% non-judgement zone. We have met with literally hundreds of families and have heard almost every mistake that could be made. We have heard them all before and have helped families get them fixed. Credit Cards, payday loans, using credit cards to make payments on other debt, cash advances, gambling issues, golf addictions – you name it and we have heard it and helped families overcome the overwhelming feelings of bad finances.
In most cases, when we have put a plan in place, families only wish they had done it sooner. Taking longer to get the ball rolling is never a promising idea.
If this seems overwhelming to you but is something that you have been thinking about for a long time, give us a call and schedule an appointment. We are experts at it and will be happy to offer you some basic direction and advice. It is what we do at Hollander & Associates.
